PSCL Printer Setup for
Windows XP Computers
- Download
driver for the HP LaserJet 4200dtn to your desktop.
- Extract the printer driver. Locate the driver icon that was
saved to your desktop. It probably looks like this:
Double-click on the driver icon to start extracting the drivers. Click
OK to extract the drivers to the default directory, c:\lj4200. This directory
will be created if it doesn't already exist.
- Temporarily disable your firewall. If you know that you don't
have a firewall, skip to the next step. Otherwise,
go to the Control Panel. Open the "Network Connections"
panel. You should see a window like this one:
The important information appears in the red box. First, locate the
adapter listed as "Enabled" in the Status column. (There
is only one adapter in this picture, but your computer may have more
than one.) If it is only listed as "Enabled," skip
to the next step. But if it is listed as "Enabled, Firewalled,"
right-click on the entry and choose "Properties" from the
drop-down menu that appears.
A new window will appear
with three tabs at the top: "General," "Authentication,"
and "Advanced." Click on "Advanced." You will
see a checked box next to the statement "Protect my computer
and network by limiting or preventing acess to this computer from
the Internet." Uncheck this box. Then click "OK."
- Put your computer on the Stanford workgroup.
To do this, go to your desktop. Find the "My Computer" icon and
right-click on it. Select "Properties" from the bottom of the pop-up
menu. A "System Properties" window will appear. Click on the "Computer
Name" tab at the top of the window. (Alternatively, open the Control
Panel. Double-click on the "System" icon to open the System
properties window. If you can't find the the "System" option, you'll
find it under "Performance and Maintenance" in the Control Panel.)
You should now see a window
like this one:
- On your computer, the line that says "Workgroup" will probably not
be followed by "STANFORD", as it is in the picture above. You need
to change that. So click on "Change..." A new window should appear:
Make sure that the "Workgroup" field in the window reads "STANFORD".
Click OK. If your computer wants to reboot, let it.
- Connect to the printer. To do this, go to the Control Panel.
Click on the "Printers and Faxes" icon. The "Printers and Faxes" panel
will open. Double-click on "Add Printer," which should be the first
option in the panel. A window will pop up; click "Next." Then choose
"A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer" and
click "Next" again. You should see a window like this:
Make sure that you enter \\brisbane\PSCL_4200dtn in the "Name:" field.
- A window will probably appear to prompt you for a printer driver.
If so, click on the "Have Disk..." button in the lower right-hand
corner of the window. You will be asked to locate the driver files
for the printer. They're in the directory you chose in step 2—the
default directory, which you probably chose, is c:\lj4200. After locating
the drivers, click OK to install them.
(From this point on,
you should no longer need the files in c:\lj4200 or the icon
on your desktop. Feel free to delete both of the folder and the desktop
icon at any time.)
- Re-enable your firewall. If you didn't have a firewall in
the first place, skip this step. But if you did disable your firewall
while setting up the printer, you should re-enable it now. To do this,
go to the Control Panel. Open the "Network Connections"
panel. Find your Ethernet connection at right-click on it. Choose
"Properties." The window that appears now will have three
tabs: "General," "Authentication," and "Advanced."
Click on "Advanced." Make sure to check the box next to
"Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing acess
to this computer from the Internet." Then click "OK."
- Print a test page. Print a document from your computer
to the printer. See if it works. If it doesn't, check the troubleshooting
page.
If you check the status
of the printer in the "Printers and Faxes" control panel on your computer,
it may read "Access denied, unable to connect." Ignore this. You should
still be able to print with ease. (If you see this message, you won't
be able to observe the print queue. We're working on a way to fix
this problem.)
- Optional: set up duplex printing. By default, duplex
printing won't be recognized: you won't be able to print on both sides
of a page. To fix this, go to the Control Panel. Open the "Printers
and Faxes" panel. Right-click on "PSCL_4200dtn on brisbane." Select
"Properties." A new window should appear:

Click on the "Device Settings" tab. A new window will appear:
Scroll down to the "Duplex Unit" line and select the "Installed" option.
Click "OK". You should now
be able to print on both sides of a page.
